Abstract

How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies portrays family values through the story of a grandson’s sacrifice for his grandmother, which begins with materialistic motives and transforms into sincere affection. This study aims to analyze how family values are represented in the film using John Fiske’s semiotic approach, which consists of three analytical levels: reality, representation, and ideology. The research employs a qualitative method with data collection techniques including documentation, observation, interviews, and literature study. The results show that at the level of reality, the film presents symbols of affection, empathy, and familial responsibility through acts of caregiving, listening, and selflessness. At the level of representation, cinematographic aspects such as warm lighting, intimate framing, and melancholic music strengthen the emotional meaning of family relationships. At the ideological level, the film represents a shift from capitalist ideology toward humanistic family values, where true wealth is measured by sincerity and devotion rather than material possessions. Therefore, the film serves not only as entertainment but also as a social reflection that emphasizes the importance of family values, respect for the elderly, and the meaning of sacrifice in modern Asian culture.
